Cleaning Tip - 24th October 2019

Living with hard water

Hard water affects 60% of the country. Suffolk is among three counties which suffer extreme levels of hard water due to high levels of chalk and limestone. The lime scale caused affects appliances, taps, sinks, baths, pipes, the lather of cleaners and soaps. It even affects the shine of your hair. One of the best ways to tackle this is to install a water softener to the incoming water supply, however for most this is not a viable option.

There are many products on the market to remove lime scale and many people deal with lime scale once a problem arises. However, regular treatment of appliances etc is the best way to keep lime scale to a minimum. To help eliminate or reduce the build up of lime scale around the kitchen sink and also in the bathroom on sinks, baths, taps, shower heads and tiles, I like to use a spray. A particular favourite of mine and many of the housekeepers is Viakal. I like Viakal sprayed around the bathroom every time it is cleaned, at least twice a week. The spray is applied and left for five minutes, then rinsed off and cleaned as usual. It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions and check that your particular surfaces are suitable for its use.

Viakal Product Description:

100% Lime scale Removal
100% Shine
Regular treatment against lime scale
Leaves a barrier that prevents water marks and lime scale build up

Used regularly, it will provide clean and shiny surfaces everyday.
Its formula respects your surfaces and helps prevent lime scale return.
Viakal regular treatment against lime scale to make surfaces shine and prevent scale deposit.

If you have food stuck to your glass oven tray or casserole dish, place it on the draining board and pour in boiling water, fill to top and add two or three tablespoons of baking soda or salt. Leave it to soak for a few hours or over night if necessary, rinse and then wash in the usual way.

How To Care For & Clean A Bathtub:

When cleaning your bath tub it is important to follow the manufactures instructions and use products that are suitable for your type of bath.

Plastic, fibre glass and acrylic baths should be cleaned with a mild bathroom spray or detergent, rubbing with a sponge. Under no circumstances should you use a scourer or any sharp instrument on a plastic, fibre glass or acrylic bath as this will damage the surface. Should staining occur, the surface can be cleaned with some neat washing up liquid and also rubbed with a little while vinegar.

Porcelain and enamel baths can be cleaned with a mild bathroom cleaner but stubborn stains can be cleaned with bicarbonate of soda sprinkled onto a cloth, a cream cleaner or even with some washing powder diluted with water. For very stubborn stains, you can wipe with some white spirit.

Yellowing enamel baths can be very unsightly but you can tackle this with a mixture of salt and turpentine, scrubbing with a cloth. Another unsightly stain is caused by hard water and can be a real menace on porcelain and enamel baths. You can cover stains with a paste made up of vinegar, bicarbonate of soda and soda which should remove it. Lime scale on all types of baths can be removed with lemon juice or vinegar.

Whatever your bath type, all baths look better for a buff with a dry cloth after cleaning and bathing, this also reduces the chance of water marks forming.
